PLS Group UK working with a long term client carried out vegetation surveys across a number of 400KV power line routes from just north of Glasgow across to Edinburgh and down into the border region
PLS Group UK have a wealth of experience when it comes to trees and vegetation effecting overhead power lines. The surveys were part of a large-scale line rebuild of 400kv networks for one of our long established clients. The data gathered provided the client and network provider with a clear picture of any trees or vegetation that were compromising the safety of the network. Information was captured electronically via mobile device using bespoke software built around engineering recommendation G55’s tree categorization system. Trees and overhead lines were measured using laser range finders to calculate a current clearance distance from the overhead line network. Other important information such as species, age class, tree condition and crucially growth rate is also noted down to build an accurate picture for any arboricultural works required.
Having both electrical network and arboricultural knowledge is essential when surveying overhead line networks. Our sister company, Power Line Surveying Limited, was on hand to provide the necessary experienced NPTC Utility arboriculture unit 5 accredited teams. These teams are also well versed in wayleaves, dealing with grantors on a daily basis helping to maintain good relations.
The routes covered hundreds of spans through urban areas, woodlands, and open moorland, with the surveying operations often being carried out in atrocious weather conditions! This wasn’t a problem; the project was delivered on time and on budget.
